The 2011 Challenge Walk is creeping up on us. This is Challenge Week and we need people to sign up, to update their challenge pages and to promote the walk on the interwebs. Get out there and go go go!
Ok, so I was being a tad optimistic there wasn’t I. How about signing up if you aren’t already for this year. Any sign ups are good. Volunteers, Crew or Walkers all count. Come on, all the cool kids are doing heroi…. errr Signing up. Dang it, peer pressure doesn’t work on this team, too eclectic. Ok, Hey look there is something shiny on the sign up page. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Also be sure to sign up for the team mailing list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/teamgreykell/ this helps us make sure we are getting the info out to everyone on the team.
Advance Ticket Sales for the Ball have closed. Tickets will be available at the door for $30!
What’s this about dancing? A Clockwork Werewulf: Being a Victorian Dance Ball in the Steampunk Style will feature vintage 19th-century dances (with instruction), occasional free waltzes, and some other assorted dancing. All the vintage dances will be taught. Our Dance Instructor, Susan de Guardiola, is coming down from Connecticut – she is a skilled instructor/caller with many dances under her belt. More information on her can be found at her website, http://www.kickery.com/ .
And what about refreshments? Dancing is thirsty work!
There will be complimentary tasty treats to eat and drink– finger-food desserts and other goodies, water, and punch. As much as possible, we will have allergen lists for all treats, and will try to have an assortment of gluten-free goods for folks with dietary restrictions. Full ingredient lists (as complete as we are able) will be available upon request.
And what, pray tell, should I wear?
We’d hope for at least an SCA style “good faith effort,” meaning this is an evening out at a Ball– but being a fundraiser whose primary goal is supporting research for a cure to Multiple Sclerosis, we’re not going to turn you away if you’re not dressed completely inappropriately for a dressy evening out in Baltimore. Don’t have tails? Wear the best you have. The “Steampunk” genre encompasses a great many things, and our guests will represent a cross-section of interests. Some handy links for your consideration:
Often inspired by Victorian themes like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, some guests will be clad in Victorian garb; many folks will accessorize with “clockwork”-themed ornamentation limited only by the constraints of their creativity and imagination. Some will add Wild-West themed elements, and some will adopt a post-(Victorian)-apocalyptic flair.
You may not have realized it, but I was the winner of the MS Walk. They gave me a medal, but I don’t think they realized I was the winner, but I knew. I knew I had won because I had no blisters, wasn’t super sore and got to spend time with a great bunch of people. How did I acheive this massive victory? Let me tell you. Contrary to the rumors, Greykell was not raised by sea monkeys.
This is the website for Team Greykell. We sponsor teams for charity events that combat Multiple Sclerosis. We currently field teams for the Challenge Bike Rides and Walks as well as provide support such as the World’s Best Rest Stops for many MS fund raising events.
We just completed the Capitol Challenge Walk for 2009 and fielded ten walkers and another sixteen support people ranging from drivers to ham radio support to also supplying the World’s Best Rest Stop, the Pirate Rest Stop. What makes it the World’s Best Rest Stop? I am glad you asked. I walked this year and saw all the rest stops and there were some very good ones out there. Every year the field of competitors gets better and better but the Pirate Rest Stop manages to stay a step ahead. A wide variety of snacks, great theming and an enthusiastic crew of the best cut throats you could ever hope to give you a banana. I may not know everything, but I do know sore feet and rest stops and I know that there is no better rest stop.
So why Team Greykell? Well Grey is the sort of shy and retiring person that would never put herself forward without a team to back her up. Ahhhh ok, maybe not. Actually, she would be out there alone and kicking butt even if she didn’t have a team and she gets her team because she is a fantastic friend and her crew can and will walk through hell and back* or bike up any hill to lend her a hand. Grey is a ball of savage energy and it is better to be on her team than in the way. MS won’t stop her, nothing can.
So that’s it really. We are a motley crew, we walk, we bike, we hand out peanutbutter and nutella sandwiches whiles dressed like pirates. We raise money, we have fun and tell rude jokes. I am just the web monkey and the team has better writers, better graphics people and probably better web monkeys, but I did get this site up and running so I get the first word in. Can you walk? Can you bike? Can you make sandwiches? Join us. You will have a good time and do some good. What could be better than that?
